You Just Never Know...

“The call God places upon a life is never easily understood from the human perspective, because His ways are rarely man's ways.” – Os Hillman

By this stage of my life, I expected to be in one of the following three positions…

Scenario #1: a high-powered attorney, raking in the “big bucks” for some prestigious law firm.

Scenario #2: working in the front office of a Major League baseball team, maybe as general manager.

Scenario #3: serving in the U.S. House of Representatives… or in a state legislature somewhere.

Well, the first option went “bye-bye” after I came to saving faith in Christ and He redirected my life… and my career path. Likewise, the second option came off the board when God directed me to start America’s first athletic prison ministry in 1987. And then God closed the door on my political ambitions when I lost two congressional campaigns in 2008 and 2010, and one legislative race in 2016.

And so, instead of serving Him in Tallahassee or Washington D.C., I pastor a small church plant in Vero Beach. And rather than orchestrating trades between the Yankees and the Red Sox, I run a basketball program for at-risk youth. What about the three books I wrote that fell well short of the New York Times bestsellers list? Well, it seems that God would rather me write a devotional message each weekday to challenge and encourage my fellow believers.

You just never know… but thankfully, He does!

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 (BSB)
