“The man who doesn’t make up his mind to cultivate the habit of thinking misses the greatest pleasure in life.” – Thomas Edison

In L. Frank Baum’s classic novel, The Wizard of Oz, there is a scene at the end where the Wizard is granting the wishes of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. The Wizard awards the Lion a medal for his bravery fighting the Wicked Witch of the West and gives the Tin Man a heart-shaped clock that ticks. Dorothy, of course, receives a trip back to Kansas by clicking the heels of her ruby slippers together and repeating “There’s no place like home”.

As for the Scarecrow, who has proved his vast intellect despite not having a physical brain, the Wizard says that following…

“Why, anybody can have a brain. That's a very mediocre commodity. Every pusillanimous creature that crawls on the Earth or slinks through slimy seas has a brain. Back where I come from, we have universities, seats of great learning, where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts and with no more brains than you have. But they have one thing you haven't got: a diploma.”

And so, the Wizard presents the Scarecrow with a diploma and immediately, he begins solving complex mathematical problems in his head.

My friend, God has blessed all of us with a brain that is the most sophisticated machine ever devised, more ingenious than the most advanced computer or AI. The only problem is that we don’t come close to fully maximizing its potential.

The average human brain weighs about three pounds and contains 100 billion neurons. That’s a lot of brain power! However, in order to make the most of what’s “between our ears”, we need to block out the ancillary noise of the outside world and spend some quiet time with our own thoughts and more importantly, with our Creator and His Word.

So do yourself a favor and stop scrolling… turn off the boob tube… unplug your earbuds… and
T-H-I-N-K!

“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” Psalm 8:3-4 (NIV)
