Time Is Ticking

“Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back.” – Harvey Mackay
Do you ever feel like the world is spinning faster and faster… and you are having a hard time keeping up? If so, you are not alone.
Consider this…
If we take the year Christ was born as our starting point, it took 1500 years for all the knowledge in the world to double. The next doubling took only 250 years. It doubled again in 150 years. By the end of World War II, knowledge doubled every 25 years. Today, knowledge is doubling every 12 months.
Bob Moorehouse wrote an essay called The Paradox of Our Time. Here is a brief excerpt:
We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life.
We’ve added years to life not life to years.
We’ve been all the way to the moon and back but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.
We conquered outer space but not inner space.
We’ve done larger things, but not better things.
And so, my friend, with knowledge accelerating at such a rapid pace and time becoming more and more fleeting, I urge you (and me) to not get caught up in all the latest technology. Instead of engaging in “information overload”, lets concentrate on the things that really matter such as our faith, our family, and our friends. After all, those three things are eternal and human knowledge is not.
So, put down the smart phone – unless you’re using it to call a friend or family member who could use some encouragement – and pick up your Bible instead. Likewise, turn off the “boob tube” and go visit an elderly relative, neighbor, or church member.
Don’t let today’s hectic pace keep you from investing your time wisely. As Teddy Roosevelt once said, “Nine-tenths of wisdom is being wise in time.”
Here are a few other famous – and very accurate quotes – about using time properly…
“Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend.” – Theophrastus
“Time is the longest distance between two places.” – Tennessee Williams
“Time moves in one direction, memory in another.” – William Gibson
“Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.” – William Penn
“Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.” – Carl Sandburg
“Time is the scarcest resource, and unless it is managed, nothing else can be managed.” – Peter Drucker
“You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” James 4:14 (BSB)
