The Sky's the Limit

“By joining together, God’s children reveal His love in ways that can never be seen when they try to do things alone. There is an element of multiplication that happens because of their obedience. People will respond to God in a much greater dimension because of His sons and daughters operating in unity.” – Os Hillman
It is called having a “silo mentality” and it isn’t meant as a compliment. In layman’s terms, it refers to churches and ministries who prefer to work in isolation from other churches and ministries.
In Indian River County, where Deanna and I have lived since relocating to Florida in 2011, there are reportedly more than 200 nonprofit organizations. My best guess is that there are at least that many churches. Meanwhile, the county’s population is estimated at 170,000 residents.
Just imagine if those 200 nonprofits and those 200 churches all worked together for the common good? In some cases, they do, such as the Christian owned and operated businesses and ministries that are members of the Vero Beach Christian Business Association.
I joined VBCBA within the first few months of living here and have never regretted that decision. It is amazing to see how the members support each other by patronizing each other’s businesses and donating to the various member ministries. In fact, Risk Takers for Christ has benefited from an annual VBCBA grant that helps subsidize our Living H2O Initiative… and association members even donate water bottles and gift cards to us every January.
Sadly, some other local ministries and Christian companies choose to be “lone rangers” and go it alone, thinking they don’t need the love, support, fellowship, and accountability that VBCBA and similar organizations offer. I feel bad for them because they are missing out on a real blessing.
Meanwhile, here are a few Bible verses to “chew on” that might motivate you to join a local business or ministry group of your own… or to encourage your church to link arms and join forces with other likeminded congregations in your area. Together, the sky is the limit to what we can accomplish for God’s glory in Jesus’s name!
“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17 (BSB)
“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.” Ecclesiastes 4:9 (ESV)
“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10 (NKJV)
“There are different gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all people. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” I Corinthians 12:4-7 (BSB)
