Take It All Back

When I am riding in my car alone and the radio is on, it is tuned to one of two things. My “go to” station is Siriusly Sinatra, a satellite channel that plays songs by the “Chairman of the Board” and his peers such as Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole. I also like listening to talk radio, especially the Glenn Beck and Dan Bongino programs.

So, how did I come across a contemporary Christian song by Tauren Wells titled, “Take It All Back”? Well, I usually watch Fox & Friends while I’m eating my breakfast or lifting weights in the morning and Tauren was the guest vocalist on their Summer Concert Series. Like I said, I rarely listen to contemporary Christian music, preferring traditional hymns, but Tauren’s song struck a chord with me (no pun intended). The beat was catchy, but it was the lyrics that really grabbed my attention.

You see, one of my absolute favorite passages of Scripture is Matthew 16. Having asked His disciples who people say that He is – and getting responses that ranged from Elijah and Jeremiah to John the Baptist, raised from the dead – Jesus gets a correct answer from Peter. “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” the fisherman replies.

Jesus commends Peter for his answer and acknowledges that God the Father had revealed that truth to him. He then promises to build His church on that rock of truth. But what comes next is what makes my spirit soar and the hairs on my arms to stand on end. “The gates of Hades shall not prevail against it,” Jesus states boldly and matter-of-factly.

Did you catch that? Jesus is saying that His church should be on the offensive, storming the very gates of hell. Our mission is to “rescue the perishing” in the words of Fanny Crosby and William Doane… and to snatch back the ceded souls and spiritual territory that Satan has stolen in the words of Tauren Wells.
