“Do not be satisfied any longer with your tiny attainments, but press forward to things more sublime and heavenly. Aspire to a higher, a nobler, a fuller life.” – C.H. Spurgeon

If you were to ask our grandson Dylan what he wanted to be when he grew up, chances are he would say, “an astronaut.” For whatever reason, he has always been fascinated by space and loves to play in his miniature rocket ship. Dylan also wants to go back to the Kennedy Space Center, which we visited in June. Hopefully, this time he will be tall enough to go on the launch simulator.

Aiming high doesn’t just apply to outer space. It also applies to your vocation – or schoolwork if you are a student – as well as your relationships. As the old saying goes, “If something is worth doing, it is worth doing well.”

The same goes for your spiritual walk. So many people, Christians included, place an emphasis on achieving good grades, getting promoted at work, and building a solid career. Truth be told, there is nothing wrong with any of those objectives. However, as believers, our #1 goal should be to grow closer to God and to be increasingly conformed to the image of His Son. Nothing else in this world compares in importance… or timelessness.

College degrees, positions at work, and even most personal relationships are temporal; but our standing with God is eternal. So, as we prepare to enter a new year, my advice is to “shoot for the stars” in all areas of life, but especially in spiritual matters.

“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 1:3 (NKJV)

- Rev. Dale M. Glading, President
