Say Goodbye to Anxiety

“What a serene and quiet life might you lead if you would leave providing to the God of providence!” – C.H. Spurgeon
Throughout the Bible, God is referred to by many different names that illustrate the various aspects of His character. In Genesis 17:7, He is called Elohim, which means “Creator, Mighty and Strong”. In Genesis 49:24, His name is El Shaddai, which can be translated as “God Almighty” or “The Mighty One of Jacob”. Genesis 15:2 refers to God as Adonai or “Lord” and in other places, such as Deuteronomy 6:4, the name YAHWEY (YHWH) or Jehovah conveys the same meaning.
Three of my favorite names of God are YAHWEH-JIREH which means “The Lord will provide” (Genesis 22:14); YAHWEH-RAPHA which means “The Lord who heals” (Exodus 15:26); and YAHWEH-NISSI which means “The Lord our banner” (Exodus 17:15). Then there is YAHWEH-SHALOM which is translated “The Lord our peace” (Judges 6:24).
However, I really love the name that Charles Spurgeon ascribes to God in today’s quote. By calling Him “the God of providence”, Spurgeon reminds his readers that if we place our faith and trust in God the Father through Jesus the Son, we need not worry about our daily needs being met. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t work for a living. On the contrary, as long as we are physically able, God expects us to work (see 2 Thessalonians 3:10). When we do, He promises to supply what we need on a daily basis through the gifts, talents, abilities, and health He has given us.
Let’s allow the “Prince of Preachers” to have the last word on the matter…
“With a little oil in the cruse and a handful of meal in the barrel, Elijah outlived the famine, and you will do the same. If God cares for you, why do you need to care too? Can you trust Him for your soul and not for your body? He has never refused to bear your burdens; He has never fainted under their weight. Come, then, soul! Say good-bye to anxiety and leave all your concerns in the hand of a gracious God.”
“Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11 (NKJV)
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)
