Pigging Out at Golden Corral

“Doctrines held as a matter of creed are like bread in the hand, which provides no nourishment to the body; but doctrine accepted by the heart is like food digested, which by assimilation sustains and builds up the body.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Every year, Deanna and I make a pilgrimage from Vero Beach to Fort Pierce to eat at the Golden Corral there. Why? Because I belong to their Birthday Club and get a free meal on my birthday!

Some Golden Corrals lack cleanliness or well-prepared food, but this one is immaculate inside and the food is always bountiful and fresh. We generally start at the salad bar, move onto the hot foods, and then finish up with a dessert (or two). I am a sucker for their banana pudding and Deanna loves their frozen custard.

Just imagine walking into Golden Corral, eyeballing all the various food stations with their tantalizing offerings… and never filling your plate or taking a single bite. That would be crazy, wouldn’t it? Doing so might save me a few hundred calories, but eventually I would become too hungry to function properly.

And so it is with biblical doctrine. If it remains as head-knowledge only, it satisfies your intellect but not your spirit. Even worse, it never motivates or energizes you to take action for God. However, when sound doctrine is fully absorbed into your soul, you can feed – make that feast – on it for the rest of your life.

My friend, please spend time feeding your spirit and nurturing your soul at the banquet table of God’s Word.

“This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in all you do.” Joshua 1:8 (NKJV)

“But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:2 (BSB)
