My Type-A Personality

“If there is one overriding quality modeled by Jesus, it is His servant’s heart.” – Os Hillman

What word or phrase would people use to best describe you? In other words, what is your most dominant personal characteristic?

Over the years, I have asked that same question of some people who know me well and whom I trust to answer honestly. Usually, their responses have included the words “passionate” and “intense.” Others have described me as “dedicated” and “driven.” And yes, the words “competitive” and “opinionated” are also frequently used… not always in the most flattering terms.

How others see us is usually a more accurate barometer than how we see ourselves. Some people – particularly those with low self-esteem or who are battling depression – are too hard on themselves, while others tend to see themselves through rose-colored glasses. If you really want a strong dose of reality, look no further than the honest and objective perceptions of people within your inner circle.

Now, there is nothing wrong with being passionate as long as you are passionate about the right things. And intensity can also be a positive attribute if it is channeled correctly. However, if your passion drives more people away than it attracts… and your intensity alienates others instead of uniting them… it may be best to take a long hard look in the mirror and ‘temper” those qualities a bit. The same goes for being competitive, opinionated, driven, etc.

Here is Os Hillman’s suggestion for people like me (and possibly you, too)…

“When you serve others, you actually begin a healing process in your own life. It is one of the mysteries of God’s kingdom. Conversely, when you become self-focused, you begin to get depressed, and you internalize your problems. But when you begin to serve others, you step out into a broader perspective. Embrace this mystery and you will see your joy returning. Remember, the joy of the Lord is your strength. It is not YOUR joy that gives you strength, it is God’s joy (see Nehemiah 8:10).

Maybe, just maybe, if I start following Os’ advice – and Jesus’ example – people will begin describing me more often as “loving, caring, and Christlike.” One can only hope… and pray!

...just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28

“Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.” 1 Corinthians 4:1
