My Gray Hairs Outnumber My Brown Ones

“Jesus always was, He always is, He always shall be. He is eternal in all His attributes, in all His offices, in all His might and willingness to bless, comfort, guard, and crown His chosen people.” – C.H. Spurgeon

As a semi-public figure, I am occasionally asked to provide a “headshot” for an upcoming speaking engagement. The same goes for when I submit an article for publication to a newspaper or political blog.

One such website that occasionally carries my editorials still uses a photo from my 2008 congressional campaign in New Jersey. I guess that makes sense because the website host helped manage my 2010 primary campaign and so, he still has a stock photo on file.

In that particular picture, I don’t have a wrinkle on my face or a gray hair on my head. My, oh my, how times have changed! These days, whenever I get my hair cut, the gray hairs that fall onto the apron far outnumber the brown ones. Meanwhile, crow’s feet encircle my eyes and new age spots appear on an almost daily basis.

Ironically, none of that bothers me in the least. So far, I have enjoyed the aging process, arthritic knees and all. So what if I can’t hear too well in my right ear and big deal if my lungs haven’t fully recovered from my near-fatal bout with Covid a year ago? Those age-related infirmities are far outweighed by the wisdom I have gained over the years and the blessing of watching our three children grow into full adulthood. And then there are our six grandkids, who bring such indescribable joy to Deanna and my lives.

The way I look at it, my rapidly graying hair and my constantly aching joints are simply a reminder that I am getting closer to enjoying my glorified body. It was ordered for me the day I trusted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and Lord, and I think it’s going to fit me just fine when the time comes. Until then, I plan to “wear out” rather than “rust out” as I seek to serve God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength.

By the way, did you ever notice that when Jesus reappears in all His glory, His hair will be white, too? Just saying…

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 (NKJV)

“His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire.” Revelation 1:4 (NKJV)
