Making the Golden Years Exactly That... GOLDEN

“The young need old men. They need men who are not ashamed of age, not pathetic imitations of themselves… Parents are the bones on which children sharpen their teeth.” – Peter Ustinov

Children have lots of friends, but they only have one set of parents. No one will argue that point and yet, that truism is widely ignored these days because our hectic, fast-paced lifestyles make us feel guilty for not spending quality AND quantity time with our children.

As a result, parents too often neglect to properly guide and yes, discipline their children because they are so busy trying to be their BFF (best friend forever). What a sad commentary that is on 21st century America and what a grave disservice that is to parents and children alike.

Trust me… there will come a time later in life when your kids become adults, leave the nest, and fend for themselves. THAT is the time when you transition from parent to mentor, a close friend who offers godly advice when asked but also knows when not to interfere.

And then there is the grandparent stage, which in some ways is the most enjoyable of all. At this point in life, grandparents know what things matter and what things don’t, so they are more apt to let the minor things slide while emphasizing the most important ones.

Transmitting one’s faith and values to the next generation (and the one after that) becomes a top priority… and so does using the free time associated with retirement to pray and intercede for our loved ones who are following in our footsteps. It is absolutely critical that our kids and grandkids see us not wasting our golden years on selfish pleasures such as nonstop cruises and endless rounds of golf, but rather utilizing them for God’s glory and the benefit of others.

I am not saying that seniors can’t enjoy the fruits of their labor, but doing things in moderation is usually the best approach. That means putting God first, family and friends second, and personal ambitions, aspirations, and pleasures third.

Finish well… and leave a legacy of which you will be proud.

“Do not rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as to a father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.” I Timothy 5:1-2 (BSB)
