I've Got Pennant Fever

“God does His greatest work in the haphazard daily grind of life.” – Os Hillman

If you’re like me, when you first wake up in the morning and before actually getting out of bed, you wait for your mind to clear and answer that all-important question: What day is it?

You see, if it’s Monday or Wednesday, I know that Deanna is home, so I don’t need to drive her to my son’s house to babysit. However, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I run her there before heading back home, to run errands, or to join some buddies for breakfast (if it’s Tuesday). On Friday mornings, Deanna drives herself, having borrowed our daughter-in-law’s car overnight.

Different days, different schedules, different responsibilities.

As for my “average workday,” there is no such thing. Somedays I am running around from meeting to meeting and others, I am working from my home office, writing my devotional messages or working on my Sunday sermon. If I am home alone, I also have dog duty, which means Coco needs to be walked midday and again in the late afternoon and both dogs need to be fed lunch.

Amidst the monotony of everyday life, one bright light shines through... I get to serve God today! Not only that, but I also get to read His Word and speak to Him in prayer. Then, I get to apply what I learned that morning in my “quiet time” with God.

In other words, there are no inconsequential days, whether you are a child, a student, a young married couple, a single mom, a divorced dad, a retiree, a widow or a widower. Every day is God’s gift to us… and what we do with it is our gift to Him.

Let me close with a baseball analogy. Late September is known for its exciting pennant races with several teams jockeying for a few coveted playoff berths. However, pennants are usually won or lost during the “dog days of August,” or the heat and humidity of June and July, or the often-chilly nights of April and May. Or yes, even in Sprint Training, when rosters are finalized, and fundamentals are hammered home.

Carpe diem, my friend. Seize the day… for God!

“The LORD’S acts of mercy indeed do not end, For His compassions do not fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 (NASB)

“I must work the works of Him that sent Me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” John 9:4 (KJV)
