Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

“How troubling it should be when the Christian learns to tolerate [sin] rather than shrink from it in disgust.” – C.H. Spurgeon
“Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” was a 1989 Disney live-action film that starred Rick Moranis as a struggling inventor named Wayne Szalinski. The plot revolves around Szalinski accidently shrinking his kids and their friends down to quarter-inch sized versions of themselves. Wayne then has to figure out how to return them to their normal sizes while they try to dodge the various dangers posed by their backyard.
Unexpectedly, “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” was a box office hit, grossing $222 million worldwide (the equivalent of $485.3 million in 2021). As a result, it spawned two sequels – “Honey, I Blew Up the Kid” in 1992 and “Honey, I Shrunk Ourselves” in 1997 – as well as a TV series and several theme park attractions.
Mistakenly shrinking your kids can make for an amusing storyline for a Disney comedy, but minimizing the danger posed by sin and its potential consequences is something else altogether. Unfortunately, far too many people – including a disturbingly high number of professing Christians – think that they can willfully sin and still avoid its effects.
Just last week, I spoke with a good friend of mine who has been suffering from multiple health issues. “My doctor said that my past is finally catching up with me,” he said, referring to his many years of “drinking and drugging.” Thankfully, he repented of that sinful lifestyle decades ago, trusting Jesus Christ as his Savior and serving in various ministries including one that I ran in New Jersey. However, the scriptural principle of “reaping and sowing” (see Galatians 6:7-9) is coming true in his life now, years after his sobriety, in the form of a stroke, heart issues, and cancer.
Knowing my friend, he will use these physical challenges to draw closer to God and to testify to His goodness. He will also share his life experiences with others in the hopes that they make better choices than he did. His desire is that they will “shrink from sin” and head in the opposite direction… straight into the arms of Jesus.
“But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out.” Numbers 32:23 (NKJV)
