Heart Over Head

“Only where the Spirit has illumined the eye, quickened the heart with divine life, and educated the soul to a heavenly taste, only there is He understood.” – C.H. Spurgeon
One of my pet peeves is how the MSM (the mainstream media) operates when they are supposedly looking for a Christian spokesperson to weigh in on a particular issue. Instead of contacting a leading evangelical such as John MacArthur, David Jeremiah, or Franklin Graham, they will tap some obscure theologian at a secular university. It’s as if they are saying that an advanced degree in religious studies from Harvard or Duke is preferrable to pastoring a large church or running an expansive ministry.
Head knowledge is valuable, but it is only worth so much, my friend. What really matters to God is heart knowledge. In other words, do you know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and are you allowing Him to shine in and through your life? If so, I’ll put your expertise up against someone with a relatively worthless theology degree from a liberal college.
Here is how Charles Spurgeon, the “Prince of Preachers,” put it…
“Purify flesh and blood by any educational process you may select, elevate mental faculties to the highest degree of intellectual power, yet none of these can reveal Christ. The Spirit of God must come with power and overshadow the man with His wings, and then in that mystic holy of holies the Lord Jesus must display Himself to the sanctified eye, as He does not to the spiritually blind sons of men.”
“But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.” I Samuel 16:7 (BSB)
