God Always Gets the Last Laugh

“Take note, not one soul who ridiculed Noah is remembered today.” – Bob Williamson

In 1980, Frank Sinatra recorded his landmark Trilogy album. It was a three-album set divided into three parts: the Past, the Present, and the Future.

The last track on the Past album was “They All Laughed”, a song written by George and Ira Gershwin in 1937 for the movie “Shall We Dance” featuring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Its lyrics include a list of people who were mocked by skeptics, but who later proved their critics wrong.

Here are some excerpts…

They all laughed at Christopher Columbus
When he said the world was round
They all laughed when Edison recorded sound
They all laughed at Wilbur and his brother
When they said that man could fly

They told Marconi
Wireless was a phony
It's the same old cry
They laughed at me wanting you
Said I was reaching for the moon
But oh, you came through
Now they'll have to change their tune

They all laughed at Rockefeller Center
Now they're fighting to get in
They all laughed at Whitney and his cotton gin
They all laughed at Fulton and his steamboat
Hershey and his chocolate bar

Ford and his Lizzie
Kept the laughers busy
That's how people are
They laughed at me wanting you
Said it would be, "Hello, Bye-bye."
But oh, you came through
Now they're eating humble pie

They all said we'd never be together
Darling, let's take a bow
For ho, ho, ho!
Who's got the last laugh?
Hee, hee, hee!
Let's at the past laugh
Har, har, har!
Who's got the last laugh now?

My friend, don’t listen to the naysayers who tell you that you are worthless, that you can’t do something and will never amount to anything, or that you have messed up too often and too much for God to ever use you again. Instead, just point to Noah, Abram, Moses, David, Peter and a host of other “failures” whom God used in a miraculous way.

Remember, God always gets the last laugh!

“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” I Corinthians 1:27 (BSB)
