Frank Sinatra Was Right

“A jealous God will not be content with a divided heart; He must be loved first and best.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Jealous? God is jealous? I thought that jealousy was a sin?
Quite on the contrary, my friend. Whereas it is wrong for us to be jealous of someone who has more than we do, there is absolutely nothing wrong with God wanting what He is owed. God knows that He – and He alone – is worthy of all worship and so, when we decide to elevate someone or something else to that lofty position, God gets jealous.
There is a reason why the 1st Commandment is: “You shall have no other gods before Me” and the 2nd is: “You shall not make for yourself a carved image… you shall not bow down to them or serve them.” No one and no thing deserve to be worshipped other than God Himself.
That means your spouse, your children, your job, your health, and all other matters in life must take a back seat to God. As Jesus put it (very graphically) in Luke 14:26, our love for God should be so real and so intense that it makes our love for our nearest and dearest relatives seem like hate.
I admit that I have a long way to go in this area, because I am absolutely crazy about my wife, kids, and grandbabies. But as Frank Sinatra famously sang, God wants our love… “All or nothing at all.”
“You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.” Revelation 4:11 (NKJV)
