“For me, the breakup of my parents’ marriage was the defining moment of my entire life. It created scar tissue. One thing that you can do when that happens is to run away or run towards something else. I ran toward purpose.” – Os Hillman
Sadly, most of us know someone who experienced some kind of trauma early in life. Their dad beat them… their mom was an alcoholic… or their uncle abused them. Maybe they were a slow learner, had a speech impediment or a handicap of some sort, or were picked on in school.
Life is full of hurts and tragically, many of them occur in our childhood when we are at our most vulnerable. And yes, many of those same hurts leave deep scars. Some physical, some emotional, some psychological, and some spiritual.
When, not if, life treats us unfairly and other people take advantage of us or let us down, we have two choices. The first is to become bitter and blame God. The second is to run into His waiting arms for protection and healing.
How I wish I could step in and stop such abuse from taking place. But alas, I can’t because I am not God. And for whatever reason, God sometimes allows such trials in our lives to shape and mold us into stronger adults who, in turn, are able to minister to others who have suffered in similar circumstances (see 2 Corinthians 1:4).
Don’t get me wrong. God is not the cause or the source of those negative life experiences. The simple truth is we live in a fallen, sinful, and depraved world that is full of evil… and evil people. But what Satan meant for harm, God can and will use for good, His glory and our blessing.
If you are hurting today – or still dealing with a wound that is decades old – please take this opportunity to turn to the One who cares about more than you can possibly imagine. So much so, in fact, that He sacrificed His only Son so that your sins could be forgiven, and you could spend eternity with Him in paradise… where all hurts will be forever healed, and all tears will be wiped away never to return.
“…casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” I Peter 5:7 (NKJV)
