Doppelgangers - Part 2

“Forgive, as you hope to be forgiven. Heap coals of fire on the head of your enemy by your kindness to him. Good for evil, remember, is Godlike.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Yesterday’s devotional was about doppelgangers… and so is today’s. Simply put, I cannot stress enough to you and to me the importance of becoming more like Jesus in our thoughts, words, and actions each and every day.

Does that mean that we will never stumble and fall? Hardly! The Christian life is more like two steps forward and one step back. However, as long as the forward steps outnumber the backward ones, we are making progress towards our ultimate goal. And eventually, we will find that even the backward steps are becoming less frequent and less severe.

Speaking of looking and acting like Jesus, there were many times during my 35-year prison ministry career when I would stand at the gate welcoming inmates as they entered the recreation yard, offering each one a handshake or a hug… and I would stop dead in my tracks.

“You’re a Christian, aren’t you?” I would say to a man I had never met before in my life. “Yes, sir, I am,” he would say. “How did you know?”

“I can see it in your face,” was always my response. Some people simply radiate Jesus.

Oh, that we would always resemble our Savior as much as those Christian brothers I met behind those barbed wire fences.

Let’s allow Charles Spurgeon, the “Prince of Preachers”, to have the last word on the subject…

“If we were what we profess to be, and what we should be, we would be pictures of Christ; yes, such striking likenesses of Him that the world would not have to hold us to the mirror and say, "Well, it seems somewhat of a likeness"; they would, when they saw us, exclaim, ‘He has been with Jesus; he has been taught by Him; he is like Him; he has caught the very idea of the holy Man of Nazareth, and he works it out in his life and everyday actions.’"

“Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in Him.” Colossians 2:6 (BSB)
