“Life is so brief that no man can afford to lose a day.” – C.H. Spurgeon
According to the CDC, the average lifespan for an American is 77.5 years. That is slightly up from 2021, when Covid caused life expectancies to drop worldwide, but still below pre-pandemic levels.
Male Americans can expect to live an average of 74.8 years, while female Americans generally live to about 80.2. Oddly, the U.S. has the lowest life expectancy among large, wealthy countries even though we far outspend our peers on healthcare.
If we multiply 77.5 years by 365 days, the average American can expect to spend 28,287.5 days on earth. Since I turn 65 next week, that means I have already used up 23,725 days… or 84% of my “allotment”.
GULP!!!
I can either get depressed over those numbers or (1) thank God that He has seen me through that many; (2) develop an even greater sense of urgency to make my remaining days count for Him; and (3) look forward to the day when I will shed my earthly body and see my Savior face to face.
Not surprisingly, I choose to do all three and I encourage you to do the same!
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 (NIV)
“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:16 (BSB)
