COVID, PAXLOVID, and JESUS

“Sin will yield to nothing less potent than the blood of Him whom God has set forth as a propitiation.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Have you ever gone to the doctor’s office and he or she prescribed an antibiotic that didn’t work? Whether it was amoxicillin, Augmentin, or azithromycin… sometimes the medicine cures what ails you and sometimes it doesn’t. In the latter case, your physician may prescribe a stronger drug or simply refer you to a specialist.

For example, when I first contracted COVID in July 2021, I tried hydroxychloroquine, but it proved ineffective, perhaps because it wasn’t administered right away. My doctor advised against ivermectin, remdesivir wasn’t available, and monoclonal antibodies such as Regeneron were not yet approved. And so, my condition worsened as I relied on over-the-counter cough medicines, fever reducers… and lots of prayer.

Thankfully, I recovered but still experience some long COVID symptoms. However, I can’t complain because I had several friends who died from the deadly Delta variant. Meanwhile, some other friends who received Regeneron were vastly improved in a matter of days.

When I got COVID for a second time last year, I took PAXLOVID and after two days of heavy congestion, I was on the road to recovery. The same goes for Deanna, who couldn’t help but catch it from me since we live together in a 34’ travel trailer.

The point that Charles Spurgeon is making in today’s quotation is that nothing – and I mean NOTHING – but the blood of Jesus Christ can cure us of our sin disease. We can try good works, attending church regularly, and giving to the poor, but none of them comes close to cleansing our souls. Conversely, just one application of Jesus’ shed blood permanently makes us whole.

Sure, we may still relapse into sin from time to time, but from an eternal standpoint, we are spiritually healed once and for all. As Robert Lowry wrote in his classic hymn…

What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
O precious is the flow that make me white as snow;
no other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

“Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” Hebrews 9:22 (ESV)
