Chuck Swindoll's Secret to Success

“A sense of our own folly is a great step toward being wise.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Quite a few years ago, I read a book by Chuck Swindoll, the esteemed Christian author. In addition to writing more than 70 books, Chuck has served as senior pastor of four different churches over the past 58 years. He is also the chancellor emeritus of Dallas Theological Seminary, having previously been its president from 1994 to 2001.
I don’t recall the name of the book in question, but I distinctly remember one piece of advice that it contained. “Take life seriously,” Chuck admonished his readers, “but don’t take yourself seriously.”
Wiser words may have never been spoken and yet, many people ignore them… or get them backwards. They take themselves – and everything that happens to them – seriously but neglect to assign the same level of importance to their life here on earth and especially, to their eternal destiny.
After all, Scripture very clearly points out that we will all have to give an account for the things we said and did in this life (see Romans 14:12). The Bible also teaches that where we will spend eternity is determined exclusively by whether we accepted Jesus as our Savior... or rejected Him.
My friend, that’s serious business!
If you haven’t yet placed your faith and trust in Jesus Christ, please do it today. Time is “a wasting” and we are not promised tomorrow. And while you’re at it, lighten up a little and try smiling a bit more.
(By the way, Chuck and his lovely wife Cynthia have been married for 68 years. What a testimony! It sounds like they took their marriage vows very seriously.)
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be required of you. Then who will own what you have accumulated?’” Luke 12:20 (BSB)
