Batman to the Rescue

“Marching and quick-marching are much easier for God’s warriors than standing still.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Our grandson Dylan loves to play with his action figures. Some of them are superheroes such as Batman, Spiderman, Iron Man, Captain America, and the Hulk. Others are characters from Star Wars. Still others are villains including Batman’s archnemesis, the Penguin and the Riddler.

However, all these plastic figures have one thing in common: they are meant for ACTION. That’s why, whenever Dylan brings them out to play, they immediately start flying, jumping, running fast, or fighting each other.

As an action-oriented person myself, it is much easier for me to do something to meet a need than to sit still, pray, and wait for God to intervene. That personality trait can be a good thing if the need is immediate such as a life-threatening situation. But in other instances, praying first and taking action second is the prudent thing to do.

Knowing the difference is sometimes difficult and waiting patiently can also be hard. But doing so invites God to intercede on your behalf while giving you time to gain a better perspective. In my case, being still also prevents me from acting emotionally, impulsively, and irrationally… a lesson I have had to learn the hard way multiple times.

“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted over the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (BSB)

“But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 (BSB)
