Are You Starry-Eyed?

“Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Many years ago, I was part of a men’s Bible study that was using a book by Chuck Swindoll to stimulate discussion. I don’t remember the name of the book, but one of his key points has stayed with me for the past 20 years or so.

“Take life seriously,” Chuck wrote, “but don’t take yourself seriously.”

In my experience, many people take that sentiment and reverse it. They take themselves very (too) seriously but treat life as if it is inconsequential. They waste countless hours each day watching TV, scrolling on their phones, or engaging in some other temporal activity. Sadly, Bible study, prayer, and sharing their faith are far down on their list of priorities.

At the end of their lives, these people look back on a life that was self-focused and tragically irrelevant. Conversely, people who put God first, others second, and themselves third generally live a life of service and purpose… leaving a strong legacy behind them.

Shooting high and desiring to make an eternal impact should be the goal of every Christian. Likewise, realizing that you are an imperfect person who is bound to make your share of mistakes along life’s long and twisting road takes a little pressure off.

Maybe the following verses will prove helpful by providing a balanced perspective on life…

“He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8 (BSB)

“You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” James 4:14 (BSB)

“Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.” I Samuel 17:46 (BSB)

“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” Matthew 10:39
