Are You Adrift In the Night?

“What is the Christian without the Bible? This is the unerring chart, the map in which every shoal is described, and all the channels from the quicksands of destruction to the harbor of salvation mapped and marked by one who knows the way.” – C.H. Spurgeon
To demonstrate just how old I really am, I remember when gas stations used to give away free maps. And so, whenever our family made a trip to Florida to escape the cold and wintry weather in New Jersey, I would go into the office at the first gas station we stopped at and help myself to a sampling of maps. Starting with the Delaware/Maryland/Virginia map, I would then follow our route through the Carolinas and Georgia until we finally arrived at our destination in the Sunshine State.
Hey, you gotta pass the time someway, right?
I imagine that my mom, who served as my dad’s navigator, had her share of maps in the front seat, too. Remember, this was before you jumped onto I-95 and simply headed south. Back then, there were more than a few times when you had to get off the interstate and travel a few back roads (Savannah comes to mind) before getting back on the superhighway.
Well, my friend, the Bible fits the same bill and fills the same purpose for our spiritual journey through life. Without God’s Word, we would be adrift in life’s waters on a dark, cloudy, and starless night without any sense of direction.
Thankfully, His Eternal Truth is available 24/7, 365 at our fingertips… either on our bedside table, the desk in our office, the bookcase in our study, or the glove compartment of our car. And yes, on our laptop, cell phone, and other mobile device.
As Karl Malden used to say on the old American Express commercials, “Don’t leave home without it!”
“Thy word is a lamp to my feet, And a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105 (NASB)
