An Ode to Thomas Griffin

“Joy is not determined by circumstances. It’s determined by the degree of God’s presence you experience.” – Os Hillman
Have you ever met someone who was going through a turbulent time and yet, they exhibited a deep sense of peace and tranquility? Thomas Griffin was such a person. Despite his body being ravaged with lung and bone cancer and pulmonary fibrosis, he refused to complain. Instead, he bore his cross with faith and dignity. More importantly, he pushed ahead even more aggressively in the various ministries in which he was involved.
Having served as an interim pastor, he became the minister-in-residence at a nursing home. He also provided pulpit supply for several churches in our area and held a weekly men’s Bible study in his home. As Thomas’ disease progressed and his days grew short, he continued to minister as long and as hard as he could.
What was Thomas’ secret? I think he simply had a childlike faith that allowed him to take God at His Word. Thomas also never got over the fact that a sinner like him (and you and me) could be forgiven and granted access to heaven.
And so, in honor of Thomas Griffin, please allow me to share the verses of a simple song that I am sure Thomas knew… and lived out loud.
I have the joy, joy, joy, joy,
Down in my heart, (where?)
Down in my heart, (where?)
Down in my heart,
I have the joy, joy, joy, joy,
Down in my heart (where?)
Down in my heart to stay
And I’m so happy, so very happy
I have the love of Jesus in my heart
And I’m so happy, so very happy
I have the love of Jesus in my heart
Subsequent stanzas include the phrases, “I’ve got the peace that passes understanding” and “If the devil doesn’t like it, he can sit on a tack.” Sounds like Thomas Griffin to me!
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee; because he trusteth in thee.” Isaiah 26:3 (ASV)
